This is my first year as a book blogger, so I decided to be “active” and join the 2013 TBR Pile Challenge by Roof Beam Reader. Basically, I compile a list of 12 books (and 2 alternatives) that have been on my “To Be Read” list for over a year. This was actually fairly hard to do because I have almost 100 books on my TBR list and the commitment required by this challenge brought on a bit of anxiety. But, I managed to condense my list to the 12 books listed below. Keep in mind some of the links are to paperback versions, which came out in 2012, but all of the books were published prior to 2012. Click more for the complete list.
3. Dark Places by Gillian Flynn
4. The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
5. The Senator’s Wife by Sue Miller
6. Five Smooth Stones by Ann Fairbairn
7. Rules of Civility by Amor Towles
8. The Paris Wife by Paula Mclain
9. A Short History of Women by Kate Walbert
10. The Tiger’s Wife by Tea Obreht
11. The Witches of Eastwick by John Updike
12. The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
Alternates
1. Death Comes to Pemberley by P.D. James
2. The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery
How convenient! My mother gave me Five Smooth Stones for Christmas. I think I’ll start with that one.
Thanks for the challenge!

What a great coincidence!
I was very contentedly reading Five Smooth Stones (glad to see it on your list!) in paperback when I received a kindle for Christmas (from my wonderful kids) and have been unable to put it down (The Book Thief), but will definitely finish Stones!

We should read Dark Places and The Paris Wife at the same time so we can chat about them! Let me know if/when you want to do it! I’m kind of booked in Jan, but we could do the other two any other time if you want!

Good luck with the challenge! Old Yeller is wonderful! I’ve been meaning The Paris Wife and A Short History of Women sounds really interesting! I haven’t read The Tiger’s Wife but I’ve heard wonderful things about it! I read a short article that Tea Obreht wrote and even there, her writing was stunning.

I’ve heard great things about it, too, but haven’t picked it up yet!

I liked “Blindness” a lot! You have to get used to the prose style a little but it’s a great read. I haven’t read any of the others on your list (“Dark Places” is also on one of my challenge lists for 2013). Looking forward to reading your thoughts on these next year!

Oh, that’s good to know! Some of the best books take a bit of time to get used to.
Rules of Civility and The Paris Wife are both good ones too
Good luck with the challenge!
