A couple of weeks ago I traveled home to Florida for a week and a half. It was a ton of fun and I got to see a lot of old friends, including one who’s getting married and has asked me to be her matron of honor. I was a little nervous because my sister’s dog is 8 lbs of horror, but despite our previous encounters we bonded and became good friends. Below is a quick rundown of what I did, complete with PHOTOS!
Friday: Tried on bridesmaid dresses and helped the bride weed out some of the options so that we had a top 5 for the big fitting on Sunday. One of the other bridesmaids and I had a lot of fun trying on some ugly dresses, but I don’t think the bride fully appreciated our Vegas-style options. Afterwards, we headed back to my friend’s house, where I shot my first gun and confirmed my suspicion that no, assault rifles should not be allowed in the home. I took a photo, but I’m not sharing it because it’s my silver bullet, so to speak, if I ever run for office on a gun control platform (I’m only half kidding). Oh, and I ate some Capt’n D’s fried okra because it’s delicious.
Saturday: Visited a friend’s family and hung out with my sister, who was only in town for the day because she’s a camp counselor. We had some excellent coffee at Cymplify (owned by Ken Block from Sister Hazel – fun story about him another time), checked out their store, and hugged a stuffed shark (see photo). Then, we headed to Flour Pot Bakery (where my business cards were already stocked, thanks to my mom and sister), and had dinner at Satchel’s. It was a perfect Gainesville day.
Sunday: Another bridal fitting, but this time my mom came along. It was a ton of fun and I was able to snag some roadside boiled peanuts on my way there (they don’t have them here in Colorado).
Monday: Monday I spent the day with my sister, our friend, and Rebecca from Love At First Book. We started our day with Dunkin Donuts, headed to the beach for lunch, tried to get into a closed bookstore, and finished up with some Friendly’s. You can read more about our day here.
Tuesday: Tuesday was a slow day and I took a nap, but I did manage to buy the new Hillary Clinton book, Hard Choices, and have lunch with a friend since middle school.
Wednesday: My dad, sister, and I headed to visit my grandparents outside of Tampa. First, we stopped off at The Library Coffeehouse on S Dale Mabry in Tampa, which is owned by my aunt. I had the lavender latte and a homemade muffin, stocked up my business cards, and Instagram’d a lot. Then we went to lunch with my grandparents and, true to my childhood, I napped on the way home.
Thursday: My last day was low-key. I got to have coffee with my oldest Gainesville friend (since I was 7) and then visited my mom at work and went to Lake Alice so that I could see an alligator before I left. Thankfully, we saw one and, no kidding, he waved at us. I ended the day with a beer with a friend’s brother and caught up on all the things I’ve missed.
