There’s a lot of misinformation about the #ReadHachette campaign’s intentions going around, such as it being an Amazon boycott or a way to condemn “aggressive” business practices as a whole. This is not the case, but Amazon’s current actions against HBG authors are deplorable and ultimately punish both them and consumers, many of whom pay for Amazon Prime memberships. That said, this campaign was designed to show support for the authors at HBG who may suffer while the two companies work out their contract – I would feel the same way no matter who the publisher was. This doesn’t mean I’ll only read HBG (I love other publishers equally and support them, too), nor is it an explicit Amazon boycott, although I support decisions to do so. It’s also not about the contract negotiations, but rather the tactics Amazon has employed while the they are negotiating. Hardball is normal, but Amazon has taken this sentiment to the extreme. In the end it’s up to the legal experts to determine whether any laws have been broken, and I am not one. To truly enact change requires more than a Twitter campaign and must come in the form of better regulations, whatever they may be. That said, I will leave you with this:
The goal of this campaign is to mitigate the negative impact Amazon’s tactics may have on authors and consumers. It’s a way for readers to share their favorite HBG titles and to serve as a reminder that ALL books can be purchased elsewhere – that’s it.
