Guest Review: To Rise Again at a Decent Hour

Today I am thrilled to have a guest review from Jennifer at Book-alicious Mama (you can read her amazing reviews here). Jennifer has graciously written a review of Joshua Ferris’ newest novel, To Rise Again at a Decent Hour. Oh, and just for the record, I’m a Red Sox fan!

Ferris’ latest novel is about an unusual combination: baseball, religion and dentistry. What do those three things have in common? Well more than meets the eye and Ferris weaves them together into a complex, yet cohesive novel that works with To Rise Again at a Decent Hour.

Paul O’Rourke has a thriving Manhattan dental practice. Professionally he’s at the top of his game. Personally? Well that’s a different story. Paul recently broke up with someone. Most of his romances fail because….well Paul’s an atheist who is obsessed with the Boston Red Sox. Don’t ask how a New Yorker is allowed to walk the streets and be a Red Sox fan…. Back to the book. Paul is also obsessed with the idea of religion but not so sure about God.

Ferris has written a book that examines the path we take to find meaning in our life. It’s not an easy path, and there are often bumps and bruises along the way. Keep an open mind with To Rise Again at a Decent Hour as it ultimately teaches us about life.
